Suzuki, NDDB & Purabi Dairy to build CBG plant in Assam
An MoU for the CBG project was signed in New Delhi in the presence of Suzuki Motor Corporation President Toshihiro Suzuki and NDDB Chairman Dr Meenesh Shah.
Assam is set to build a compressed biogas (CBG) plant through a collaborative initiative involving Japan’s Suzuki R&D Centre India, the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and Purabi Dairy. The CBG project aims to convert dairy and agricultural waste into clean energy and organic fertiliser, supporting sustainable agriculture while enhancing farmers’ incomes.
An MoU for the CBG project was signed in New Delhi in the presence of Suzuki Motor Corporation President Toshihiro Suzuki and NDDB Chairman Dr Meenesh Shah. Key signatories included NDDB Executive Director S. Rajeev, North East Dairy and Foods Ltd. (NEDFL) Managing Director Satya Brata Bose and Suzuki R&D Centre India Director Kenichiro Toyofuku.
NEDFL, a joint venture between the Assam government and NDDB that operates Purabi Dairy, will oversee the development and operation of the plant. NDDB will provide technical expertise, while Suzuki R&D Centre India will invest in the project and benefit from carbon credits generated through reduced emissions.
The facility will process cattle dung and agricultural residues to produce compressed biogas, a clean alternative to fossil fuels for transport and industrial use. Additionally, the by-product will be converted into organic fertiliser, improving soil health and promoting eco-friendly farming practices.
The project is expected to strengthen Assam’s circular economy by transforming waste into valuable resources. It will also create an additional income stream for dairy farmers by monetising agricultural waste.
Dr Meenesh Shah highlighted that the initiative builds on the region’s naturally sustainable farming practices and will further enhance rural livelihoods. Toshihiro Suzuki noted that the project reflects Japan’s continued commitment to supporting India’s growing biogas ecosystem.
During the recent visit of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, the two countries agreed to cooperate for the development of 1000 CBG projects in India. Assam is already making strides in the field of biofuels’ development. Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) has announced the construction of 350 integrated CBG plants across North East region and has signed a special MoU with the state government of Assam.
Oil India Limited (OIL) and Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) have promised to build 8-10 CBG plants across various districts in Assam.
