Seventy Percent Recovered: India’s Textile Waste Numbers Are Impressive Till You Read the Fine Print
A Ministry of Textiles factsheet released Sunday claims India recovers over 70% of the 7.8 million tonnes of textile waste it manages annually — about 8.5% of the global total — through an ecosystem supporting 40–45 lakh livelihoods. The numbers position India as a global circularity leader. They also invite the harder question the factsheet doesn't answer: how much of that "recovery" is genuine recycling, and how much is a one-way trip down the value chain?
