NOIDA: Biogas plant to come up in Sector 145

The waste-to-energy project will be part of the 300 tonnes-per-day (TPD) Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Management (IMSWM)

The Noida Authority has approved the establishment of a 300 tonnes-per-day (TPD) Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Management (IMSWM) plant to strengthen the city’s waste management system.

According to Noida Authority CEO Lokesh M, the decision was taken during the authority board meeting to ensure proper treatment of waste in compliance with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016. He said the goal is to make Noida self-sustainable in managing its daily waste and reduce its environmental footprint.

The proposed facility will be designed to scientifically process solid waste and generate Bio-CNG or energy. It is likely to come up either in Sector 145 or in village Astoli, where around 17 acres of land have been earmarked for the project. Once operational, the plant is expected to significantly reduce the city’s landfill dependency, cut carbon emissions, and bring down operational costs.

There is a large landfill in the area that lies adjacent to the Dedicated Freight Corridor of India Ltd. (DFCCIL), a PSU of the Indian Railways.

Currently, Noida generates between 900 and 1,000 tonnes of municipal waste per day—a figure projected to rise to nearly 1,500 tonnes in the coming years due to rapid urbanisation and population growth.

To address this increasing waste load, the authority is also working on additional projects, including a 900 TPD Green Coal facility being developed by NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd (NVVN). Of this capacity, 600 TPD will cater to Noida and 300 TPD to Greater Noida. A cow-dung biogas project is planned at the renowned animal shelter situated in Sector 94 that funded through CSR of HCL Foundation. Furthermore, six decentralised waste-to-energy units, each with a capacity of 40 TPD, are being set up across the city.

Meanwhile, the authority recently terminated its 2023 agreement with Indo Enviro Integrated Solution Limited for a 300 TPD wet waste-to-CBG plant, citing lack of progress on the project.
