Delhi CM Rekha Gupta inaugurates Rs 16-crore Goyla Dairy biogas project

The objective behind the development of biogas projects based on cattle dung is to prevent dairy waste from polluting the Yamuna river in national capital.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has inaugurated a Rs 16-crore biogas plant in southwest Delhi’s Goyla Dairy to process cattle dung and massive prevent dairy waste from entering drains and polluting the Yamuna.

Located on Main Goyla Dairy Road, the facility can process 200 metric tonnes of cattle dung daily, producing approximately 14,000 cubic metres of raw biogas and 5.6 tonnes of purified compressed biogas.

The compressed gas will be supplied to Indraprastha Gas Limited through a pipeline, while the residual slurry will be converted into organic fertiliser.

The biogas plant has been developed by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) with funding from the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs’ Urban Development Fund. The biogas plant aims to improve waste management in Delhi’s dairy colonies, where inadequate disposal of cattle dung has contributed to drain pollution.

Rekha Gupta said that cleaning the Yamuna requires addressing pollution at its source. The Chief Minister urged dairy operators to cooperate with designated waste collection systems and called on officials to ensure regular collection and safe processing of cattle dung.

Under the project, the biogas plant operator will purchase cattle dung from dairy owners at 67 paise per kilogram. The arrangement is expected to provide livestock owners with additional income while reducing waste disposal problems.

MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar had directed the implementing agency to establish adequate arrangements for collecting, transporting and processing dung to prevent it from entering nearby drains.

Rekha Gupta informed that three biogas plants had become operational in Delhi over the past 18 months, while work was progressing on six more. The Goyla Dairy biogas plant inauguration forms part of the Centre’s Clean Yamuna initiative, which includes a target of processing 1,500 tonnes of dairy waste.

Delhi Cabinet Minister Ashish Sood held that the project reflects the government’s push for practical solutions to longstanding civic and environmental challenges. The facility is expected to improve sanitation, promote clean energy and help reduce pollution entering the Yamuna.
