Hyderabad’s Juno Joule, Germany’s Select Energy to build green hydrogen project at Andhra port

The green hydrogen & ammonia plant at Mulapeta port aims to produce 180 KTPA of green hydrogen by 2031 and Juno Joule has selected Select Energy as a co-developer and anchor off-taker for the green energy project.

India’s quest toward green hydrogen economy received a significant boost with a strategic MoU between Juno Joule Green Energy and German clean energy firm Select Energy GmbH. Signed at the World Hydrogen Summit 2025, the agreement designates Select Energy as a co-developer and anchor off-taker for Juno Joule flagship green hydrogen and ammonia project at Mulapeta port in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh.

The Juno Joule project ranks among India’s largest integrated green hydrogen ventures, designed to meet stringent international certification standards and cater to key export markets in Europe, Japan, South Korea and India.

Juno Joule held that Select Energy brings expertise in hydrogen logistics, trading, and regulatory compliance, strengthening the facility’s export potential.

The partnership covers equity participation, co-development of port-connected export infrastructure, and long-term offtake deals. A flexible yet stable pricing structure has been planned to ensure commercial viability.

The green hydrogen & ammonia plant aims to produce 180 KTPA of green hydrogen by 2031. It will feature advanced electrolysis, ammonia synthesis, desalination and port-linked logistics. Supported by technology partners like Thyssenkrupp Nucera and KBR Inc., the facility is being tailored to comply with European Union directives on renewable energy and non-biological renewable fuels (RED II, RED III, and RFNBO).

As EU regulations mandate that electricity for green hydrogen production come from renewable sources commissioned within 36 months prior to the plant’s launch, Juno Joule is securing Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with new solar and wind projects. Additional compliance efforts include adhering to energy traceability standards and grid zone rules set by the EU.

Beyond its export goals, the project is expected to create 6,000 direct and indirect jobs and help reduce CO₂ emissions by 1.8 million tonnes annually. Under India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, Andhra Pradesh is poised to emerge as a strategic export hub.

Juno Joule CEO Nagasharath Rayapati emphasized the need to build local expertise in green hydrogen, which involves complex chemical analysis and environmental assessments—such as managing brine discharge from desalination. To address the current skills gap, the company is collaborating with the Andhra Pradesh government to launch training programs aimed at preparing the local workforce for the specialized demands of the green hydrogen sector.
