Odisha government okays Rs 680 crore investment in CBG projects

Indian Oil, Kineta Global and Sree Metaliks Bio Energy among investors; projects expected to strengthen Odisha’s bioenergy sector.

The state government Odisha has approved three compressed biogas (CBG) projects involving a combined proposed investment of Rs 680 crore, with a planned annual production capacity of 29,700 tonnes. The projects form part of 22 investment proposals worth Rs 3,855 crore cleared by the State-Level Single Window Clearance Authority (SLSWCA), which are expected to generate 7,296 jobs across the state.

The CBG investments highlight Odisha’s growing focus on bioenergy infrastructure, alongside investments in manufacturing, tourism, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and technology-enabled services.

Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) has proposed an investment of Rs 360 crore to establish CBG plants across Angul, Jajpur and Sambalpur. The facilities will have a combined annual production capacity of 14,850 tonnes and are expected to generate 745 jobs.

Two other projects will further expand the state’s planned CBG production capacity. Kineta Global Ltd will invest Rs 170 crore in a facility in Sundargarh with an annual production capacity of 8,250 tonnes. Meanwhile, Sree Metaliks Bio Energy will invest Rs 150 crore in a CBG facility in Balasore, with a planned annual capacity of 6,600 tonnes.

Together, the three projects represent a proposed investment of Rs 680 crore and an annual CBG production capacity of 29,700 tonnes. Their development could strengthen Odisha’s emerging bioenergy ecosystem by expanding domestic CBG production and supporting employment generation in the project locations.

Compressed biogas is produced by purifying biogas generated through the anaerobic digestion of organic feedstocks, including agricultural residues, animal waste and other biodegradable materials. It can be used as a transportation fuel and supplied to the city gas distribution network, subject to applicable technical and regulatory requirements.

Chief Secretary Anu Garg said the 22 approved investment proposals span 11 sectors across 12 districts, reflecting the state’s efforts to attract investments across established industries and emerging sectors.
