Mizoram to generate power from plastic waste
Previously, FC Tech Energy Company made a detailed presentation before the Empowered Committee on Investment of the state government.
The state government of Mizoram has granted in-principle approval to a Mumbai-based firm to establish a fuel cell and sustainable energy processing plant in the state.
As per reports, the proposal was cleared after FC Tech Energy Company made a detailed presentation before the Empowered Committee on Investment of the state government. This committee is chaired by Chief Minister Lalduhoma.
During the meeting, the company showcased its proprietary technology for converting plastic waste into fuel cells and other forms of sustainable energy. FC Tech Energy expressed its intent to set up a local facility in Mizoram and outlined key infrastructure requirements, including availability of land, water and power supply.
The Empowered Committee agreed to the proposal in principle and decided to send a state delegation to Mumbai to assess the company’s existing operational plant. The committee also discussed potential locations within Mizoram that could meet the project’s land requirements.
If implemented, the project is expected to address plastic waste management challenges while contributing to clean energy generation in the state.
New Ginger Plant
Meanwhile, the committee also reviewed the progress of a ginger processing unit being developed at Khuangleng in Champhai district in eastern Mizoram. The project is being executed by Opickpure Private Limited under a Memorandum of Understanding signed with the state government in September last year.
Opickpure is investing Rs 2.50 crore in the ginger processing facility, with construction nearing completion. Once operational, the unit is expected to add value to local agricultural produce and support farmers in the region.
Mizoram’s RE Scenario
Mizoram is steadily scaling up its renewable energy capacity but key emphasis remains on solar and hydropower. At the end of 2025, the state’s installed renewable power capacity stood at around 77.16 MW.
A key milestone in this expansion is the commissioning of the 10 MW Thenzawl Solar Power Plant, which has strengthened local generation and improved energy security. Mizoram has also proposed to build a 2,400 MW pumped storage hydroelectric project.
