NTPC, Assago will develop India’s first indigenous ‘Green Urea Plant’
As per the MoU signed, NGEL will supply green ammonia, captured carbon dioxide, renewable power etc to Assago Industries, enabling the production of Green Urea using entirely clean and renewable feedstock.
NTPC Green Energy Ltd (NGEL), a subsidiary of NTPC, has signed an MoU with Assago Industries to develop and operationalise India’s first large-scale indigenous ‘Green Urea plant.’
The new green urea project will be established at the upcoming Green Hydrogen Hub in Pudimadaka, Andhra Pradesh. The collaboration marks a significant step towards decarbonising India’s fertiliser sector and advancing the country’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.
Under the agreement, NGEL will supply green ammonia, captured carbon dioxide, renewable power and other essential utilities to Assago Industries, enabling the production of Green Urea using entirely clean and renewable feedstock.
India consumes nearly 35–40 million tonnes of urea annually, with 8–10 million tonnes met through imports. This dependence exposes the country to price volatility, foreign exchange outflows, geopolitical risks and carbon-intensive supply chains. The NGEL–Assago partnership aims to address these challenges by establishing a fully indigenous Green Urea value chain powered by renewable hydrogen and green ammonia.
The Pudimadaka Green Hydrogen Hub is planned as a major green chemicals cluster with a capacity of 2.5 million tonnes per annum, producing green methanol, green ammonia, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and green urea. Assago Industries will be among the first private players in India to manufacture Green Urea at scale using renewable ammonia and captured CO₂, setting a new benchmark for sustainable fertiliser production.

The collaboration is expected to strengthen fertiliser self-reliance, enable large-scale decarbonisation, boost Andhra Pradesh’s emerging green hydrogen corridor and align closely with national climate and energy priorities.
NTPC has been on the forefront of green hydrogen based developments in the country. It signed deal with Japan’s ENEOS Corporation to collaborate on green hydrogen and its derivatives, including green methanol. Earlier in January 2026, NTPC said that it would be developing green hydrogen projects across Uttar Pradesh.
