Uniper, Syzygy Plasmonics to bolster SAF production in Latin America

The new agreement adds to Uniper’s low carbon portfolio and brings additional commercial traction to Syzygy’s planned NovaSAF facilities in Central and South America, as NovaSAF-1 in Uruguay approaches a final investment decision.

Uniper has joined a growing list of aviation fuel buyers that have reserved future production capacity from Syzygy Plasmonics’ NovaSAF platform, as commercial momentum behind the company’s biogas-to-SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) technology continues to build.

The agreement adds to Uniper’s low carbon portfolio and brings additional commercial traction to Syzygy’s planned NovaSAF facilities in Central and South America, as NovaSAF-1 in Uruguay approaches a final investment decision. More importantly, the agreement for Syzygy’s dual-certified pathway helps to enhance the European Union’s ability to meet mandate targets for both bio and RFNBO SAF.

Trevor Best, CEO Syzygy Plasmonics, said, “Uniper’s decision to reserve NovaSAF capacity reflects the commercial traction our platform is attracting at the moment when it is most needed to meet mandate volumes. Agreements like this affirm that the market is moving to meet EU commission targets and companies like Syzygy have the right product, at the right time, with the right volumes.”

NovaSAF is Syzygy Plasmonics’ commercial project platform, converting biogas to sustainable aviation fuel using the company’s proprietary Rigel photocatalytic reactor. Designed for cost competitive production, NovaSAF facilities are planned globally. NovaSAF-1 in Uruguay is at final investment decision, a milestone that reflects the strength and readiness of the platform.

Benedikt Messner, SVP New Energies, Uniper, stated, “Uniper is committed to building a diversified portfolio of low-carbon energy solutions that support our customers’ decarbonization goals. Securing access to Syzygy’s innovative technology is another important step in building our position in a market with significant growth potential.”

Bringing certainty to a diversified low carbon supply portfolio

For Uniper, the agreement represents a deliberate step in building a low carbon energy portfolio that includes sustainable aviation fuel. As European aviation faces growing demand under ReFuelEU and CORSIA, securing forward supply from biogas-to-SAF pathways positions Uniper to serve customers in an increasingly dynamic market.

The agreement follows Uniper’s recently announced cooperation with Arcadia eFuels, which supports the development of large-scale eSAF production in Europe.
