MCD clubs with NDDB for CBG revolution in Delhi as Amit Shah pushes for clean Yamuna
An MoU was signed in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who described the project as a scalable model for sustainable urban waste management.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has signed an MoU with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) for the development of Compressed Biogas (CBG) plants for the scientific processing of cow dung. The biogas initiative aims to reduce pollution in the Yamuna River, improve urban sanitation and raise the income of cattle farmers.
The agreement was signed in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who described the project as a scalable model for sustainable urban waste management. He emphasised that the initiative could be replicated in other major cities across India.
Under the MoU, an integrated system will be developed to collect and process cow dung generated by nearly 1.25 lakh cattle in Delhi. The collected waste will be converted into compressed biogas and organic manure. Livestock owners will receive Rs 1 per kilogram of cow dung supplied, creating an additional income stream for farmers.
Amit Shah highlighted that the project addresses multiple challenges simultaneously, including urban cleanliness, renewable energy generation, promotion of organic farming, and livelihood support. He said that preventing waste from entering the Yamuna is critical for its rejuvenation, aligning with the vision of Narendra Modi.
He further stated that the government is already working on nearly 80 treatment plants in Delhi to handle sewage and industrial waste. Efforts are underway to ensure that no untreated wastewater flows into the Yamuna by December 2028.
The collected cow dung will be processed at facilities in Nangli, Ghoga-Goyla and Ghazipur. The initiative is expected to serve as a national model for converting waste into valuable resources while promoting environmental sustainability and rural prosperity.
Meanwhile MCD has set coming September as the deadline for the completion of Goyla CBG project. NDDB has been striving for integrating CBG projects with the dairies across the country. Recently, Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil called on the milk milk cooperatives and dairies to accelerate the development of CBG plants that will transform cattle dung and other organic waste into sustainable energy and organic manure.
