‘NDDB – Banas Dairy – Suzuki’ come together to set up biogas plant in Gujarat
The MoU for the new project was signed during the inauguration of a 100 MTPD Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant at Bukhala village in Banaskantha by Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat.
The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), Banas Milk Union (Banas Dairy) and Suzuki Research and Development Institute have signed a tripartite agreement to develop a 75 metric tonnes per day (MTPD) biogas plant in Gujarat’s Banaskantha district. The biogas project will be cow dung–based.
The agreement was signed during the inauguration of a 100 MTPD Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant at Bukhala village in Banaskantha by Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat. The occasion marked another step in the state’s push to expand clean energy capacity through the cooperative sector.
The MoU was signed by Sangram Chaudhari, Managing Director of Banas Milk Union; Kenichiro Toyofuku, Director, Suzuki R&D Centre India Private Limited; and Shashikumar B N, Group Head (ES), NDDB. The signing took place in the presence of Gujarat Legislative Assembly Speaker and Chairman of Banas Milk Union, Shankar Chaudhary, and Gujarat’s Minister for Agriculture, Jitu Vaghani, along with senior officials from the dairy, cooperative and energy sectors.
The proposed biogas plant will utilise cow dung sourced from the cooperative dairy network to produce compressed biogas and high-quality organic manure. The project is expected to support clean energy generation, improve waste management, and provide additional income opportunities for dairy farmers, thereby strengthening rural livelihoods.
The collaboration reflects the focus of NDDB on sustainable development and the promotion of a circular economy by integrating cooperative institutions with advanced technology. Through partnerships with milk unions and technology providers, NDDB would scale up biogas production while contributing to climate action and national energy security.
NDDB is also supporting cooperative milk unions across the country by offering technical expertise and consultancy services for setting up CBG plants, in line with national priorities of enhancing farmer incomes, efficient waste utilisation, and the objectives of the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying and the Ministry of Cooperation.
Besides Suzuki, NDDB has collaborated with several key players in the recent past to bolster biogas in India. It partnered with World Biogas Association (WBA) last year to integrate international best practices with NDDB’s extensive dairy network. In September 2025, the board said that it would be setting up 15 plants across Gujarat, Rajasthan, Odisha, Goa and Bihar.
