IGL, Hindustan Waste Treatment collaborate for CBG projects
Under the new JV agreement, IGL and HWT will jointly set up compressed biogas plants, with both partners holding equal equity stakes of 50 percent each.
Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL) has announced a new joint venture with Hindustan Waste Treatment (HWT) to develop compressed biogas (CBG) and other biofuel projects.
Under the agreement, IGL and HWT will jointly set up compressed biogas plants, with both partners holding equal equity stakes of 50 percent each.
The joint venture underscores IGL’s strategy to expand its footprint in renewable and alternative fuels, aligned with India’s broader clean energy and waste-to-wealth objectives.
The board of directors of the joint venture will initially consist of four members, with each partner nominating two directors. This structure is expected to ensure balanced governance and shared decision-making between the two companies.
The latest partnership adds to IGL’s growing portfolio of bioenergy collaborations. In November, the company had entered into a similar joint venture with CEID Consultants & Engineering to develop compressed biogas and biofuel projects, also on a 50:50 equity basis. Together, these initiatives signal IGL’s continued focus on diversifying its energy mix and strengthening its presence in the sustainable fuels segment.
Last year, IGL has already inked agreements with two technology collaborators with plans to build 19 CBG plants across four states of India – Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. IGL’s collaborative efforts aim to yield 0.45 MMSCMD (million metric standard cubic meters per day) of biogas from waste, amounting to roughly 5 percent of IGL’s daily requirements.
The biogas generated from these biogas facilities are expected to be integrated into IGL’s city gas distribution (CGD) network.
Before that, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) had inked an MoU with IGL for the development of compressed biogas plant (CBG) and integrated CBG-CNG plant on a land parcel of three acres on Ghogha Dairy. This would be created under Solid Waste Management Rules to generate 4000kg every day from about100 tonnes of biomethane per day.
