Andhra Pradesh gears up for two new waste-to-energy projects
The state government has planned for 264-tonnes-per-day (TPD) Waste-to-Energy plants each for Kurnool and Kadapa districts with an investment of Rs 180 crore.
In a significant move to strengthen waste management and promote renewable energy in the Rayalaseema region, the Andhra Pradesh government has cleared multiple waste-to-energy (WtE) projects in Kurnool and Kadapa districts.
A 264-tonnes-per-day (TPD) Waste-to-Energy plant will be set up in Kurnool with an estimated investment of Rs 100 crore. The facility will scientifically process municipal solid waste and convert it into electricity, helping reduce landfill dependency while improving sanitation across the Kurnool Municipal Corporation limits.
As per reports, the project will mark a major upgrade in the district’s solid waste management infrastructure.
Similarly, Kadapa district will also see the development of a similar 264 TPD WtE plant at a projected cost of Rs 80 crore. Additionally, a 50 TPD Bio-Methanation unit will be established with an investment of Rs 60 crore to process wet waste. The biogas generated from the plant will be used for power generation and other energy needs, supporting cleaner fuel alternatives.
The waste-to-energy projects are designed to offer a sustainable, long-term solution to growing urban waste challenges while advancing renewable energy production, reducing pollution, and improving public health.
AP Strives For ‘Clean State’
Urban Development Minister Ponguru Narayana had recently revealed about the government’s plan to develop waste to energy projects across all districts of Andhra Pradesh. The objective is to clear the legacy waste accumulated in dumping yards across the state. Last December, the government formalised Power Purchase Agreements orPPAs for four proposed waste-to-energy (WtE) projects in Nellore, Kadapa, Kurnool and Kakinada.
The government has released AP Integrated Clean Energy Policy-2024 (ICEP) last year. Under the scheme of things, the Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) will establish 500 Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) plants across various districts, with a combined capacity of 11,000 metric tons.
