Agreement for Rs 99-cr Kozhikode biogas project to be signed this month
The tripartite agreement will be signed between the Kerala State Government, the Kozhikode Corporation, and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), which will be responsible for setting up the facility.
In a significant step towards sustainable waste management, the Kozhikode Corporation Council, in a special meeting chaired by Mayor Beena Philip, has approved the signing of an agreement to establish a compressed biogas (CBG) plant at Njeliyanparamba later this month.
The tripartite agreement will be signed between the Kerala State Government, the Kozhikode Corporation, and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), which will be responsible for setting up the biogas facility. Corporation Secretary K.U. Bini confirmed that construction is set to begin shortly, with BPCL also ensuring all necessary safety measures are in place.
The Kozhikode Corporation will allocate seven acres of land for the project, where the plant will process 150 tonnes of biowaste daily. As per reports, the biowaste will be collected from across wards of Kozhikode by the Haritha Karma Sena. This will be converted into biogas.
The project cost of is estimated to be Rs 99 crore. The biogas plant will also have an attached fuel station, and the compressed biogas produced—approximately six tonnes per day—will be sold to GAIL India.
The construction of the plant is expected to be completed within two years. The initiative is poised to make Kozhikode a model city for circular economy practices and eco-friendly urban infrastructure.
I Am Renew reported in March this year that the Kozhikode city corporation has decided to set up a biogas plant at Njeliyanparamba waste dumpyard, which many say exists for two centuries, aimed at producing up to 6-tonnes of cooking gas on everyday basis.
Inspired by the success of Brahmapuram project, the Kerala Government is mulling to establish similar CBG facilities at five more locations across the state namely – Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, Kollam, Kannur, and Changanassery. This was informed recently by Kerala’s Local Self-Government Minister MB Rajesh.
