Sembcorp, BPCL make Joint Venture for green hydrogen and other renewable energy projects

Sembcorp Green Hydrogen India Private Limited has entered into a 50:50 joint venture with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) to advance renewable energy and green hydrogen initiatives across India. The company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sembcorp Industries.

The new collaboration is seen as a strategic step toward supporting India’s clean energy transition and long-term development goals. The two conglomerates aim to jointly explore opportunities in the production, operation, and commercialization of renewable energy, green hydrogen, and the various derivatives.

As per the officials statement, in addition to green hydrogen, the joint venture will evaluate projects focused on green ammonia production and bunkering, emissions reduction in port operations, and other emerging green fuel technologies.

The collaboration will tap into Sembcorp’s proven track record in renewable energy and BPCL’s extensive expertise in the petroleum and infrastructure sectors.

Sembcorp views green hydrogen and ammonia as critical tools in its decarbonization strategy. With a strong foothold in India’s renewable energy market, including a portfolio of 6 GW of clean energy assets, Sembcorp is well-positioned to support large-scale, cost-effective green hydrogen production.

Vipul Tuli, President and CEO of Renewables (West) and CEO of the Hydrogen Business at Sembcorp, stated, “Our partnership with BPCL underscores Sembcorp’s commitment to accelerating renewable energy and green hydrogen development in India. Combining our clean energy capabilities with BPCL’s sectoral strengths, we aim to identify impactful solutions to decarbonize challenging sectors. This is part of our broader mission to deliver scalable, low-carbon energy solutions for a more sustainable future.”

G Krishnakumar, CMD of BPCL, apprised, “We will leverage our combined aspirations, expertise and resources, to jointly explore the development of innovation-led, best-in-class renewable energy and green hydrogen solutions for supporting India’s ambitious climate goals and our own aspiration to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040 in Scope 1 and 2.”

The CMD also added that they are committed to building a robust renewable energy portfolio, with a target of 10 GW, to meet the energy needs of tomorrow and become a Net Zero Energy Company by 2040.
