India producing 920 TPD biogas with 132 CBG plants: Hardeep Singh Puri
Hardeep Singh Puri said SATAT programme is delivering multiple benefits, including lower emissions, additional income for rural communities, and reduced dependence on conventional fossil fuels.
In a major revelation, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has stated that India has commissioned 132 Compressed Biogas (CBG) plants with a combined production capacity of 920 tonnes per day (TPD).
This is significantly strengthening the country’s renewable energy and waste-to-wealth ecosystem and is set to expand further under the government’s flagship Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT) initiative.
Highlighting the transformation of agricultural and organic waste into clean fuel, Puri said the programme is delivering multiple benefits, including lower emissions, additional income for rural communities, and reduced dependence on conventional fossil fuels. “What was once waste is now powering progress,” he noted,.
He said on social media, “By converting agricultural residue and organic waste into clean fuel, CBG is unlocking value across the chain – supporting farmers, improving waste management and accelerating green transport adoption. This integrated circular-energy approach reflects the long-term strategic push for sustainable fuels under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji.”
Launched on October 1, 2018, SATAT aims to create a robust ecosystem for producing CBG from biomass and waste sources such as crop residue, cattle dung, and municipal solid waste. Under the initiative, public sector oil and gas marketing companies—including IOCL, BPCL, HPCL, GAIL and IGL—have invited expressions of interest from entrepreneurs to procure and market CBG across the country, providing long-term offtake assurance to project developers.
Alongside progress in bioenergy, India is also pushing to enhance domestic hydrocarbon production to strengthen energy security. In December 2025, the government offered 50 new exploration and production (E&P) blocks across oil, gas and coal bed methane (CBM) assets, marking a major step under the Open Acreage Licensing Policy (OALP-X), Discovered Small Field (DSF-IV) round, and special CBM bid rounds for 2025 and 2026.
