Delhi mulls new biogas project in Ghazipur dairy area

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is planning to establish a 300 tonnes-per-day (TPD) biogas plant at the Ghazipur dairy farm. The objective of the new biogas project is to address the growing issue of dairy waste and prevent its discharge into the Yamuna.

The proposal, which involves developing the biogas plant on approximately five acres of land, will be presented before the MCD House later this month. After this, the official tenders are expected to be floated soon.

Authorities have been directed to collaborate with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) to ensure effective waste management in dairy colonies and cow shelters.

The biogas project forms part of a broader action plan aimed at curbing pollution caused by untreated dairy waste entering city drains. In addition to the Ghazipur facility, the plan includes the development of ten biogas plants, nine wastewater treatment units, improved drainage systems in dairy colonies, and the construction of sedimentation chambers.

Capital’s Course Correction

MCD has already commissioned its first biogas plant at Nangli dairy, with a processing capacity of 200 TPD. Two more plants are currently under construction at Goyla and Ghogha dairies. Furthermore, ten additional plants have been proposed across multiple locations, including Bhalswa, Masoodpur, and Rohini, with a combined capacity of 1,400 TPD, significantly strengthening Delhi’s waste management infrastructure.

The NDDB might also be developing a 100 TPD biogas plant in north Delhi’s Civil Lines area to address cattle waste management and reduce pollution in the Yamuna River.

The MCD has also unveiled a Rs 361-crore plan to expand the city’s solid waste management infrastructure by setting up four new waste processing projects to end landfills in the capital. The Delhi government has cleared a proposal to introduce ‘CM-Pragati’ monitoring system to fast-track major public infrastructure projects that would include waste management and waste-to-energy projects.
