Asterion to invest €1.5 billion into biomethane projects across Europe
ABIO claims to be rapidly scaling its European footprint, with six operational biomethane plants, six under construction, and a target of 20 operational facilities by the end of 2026.
Asterion Industrial Partners has committed €1.5 billion to its European biomethane platform, ABIO (Asterion Bioenergy) for the development and operation of biomethane assets across key markets, deploying strategies tailored to local market maturity and backed by strong local teams and partnerships.
This investment capacity includes €800 million of equity, comprising €400 million committed by Asterion Industrial Infra Fund III and an additional €400 million in co-investment commitments from existing investors.
Asterion currently operates six biomethane plants, with six additional facilities under construction, and has completed nearly ten transactions in recent months, including greenfield developments, acquisitions and asset conversions. Asterion says that ABIO is on track to reach 20 operational plants by the end of 2026.

With this funding and a strong development pipeline, ABIO is expected to achieve a biomethane production capacity of approximately 3 TWh within the next three to four years, reinforcing its role in Europe’s energy transition.
Pan-European Platform
ABIO has established a presence in five key European markets — Iberia, Italy, Germany, Benelux and the United Kingdom — with a strategy tailored to local market conditions. In more mature markets in Central and Northern Europe, growth is driven by the acquisition and transformation of existing assets, while in Southern Europe the focus is on greenfield developments. Operations are managed by local vehicles supported by specialized teams in each geography, ensuring deep market expertise and strong relationships with agricultural suppliers and regulatory authorities.
Looking ahead, Asterion targets the operation of 40 biomethane plants across Europe by 2030, producing up to 3.5 TWh of biomethane annually, equivalent to the energy consumption of more than 220,000 households, and avoiding up to 8 million tons of CO₂ equivalent emissions.
