SRM University and Hynfra to set up green hydrogen CoE

The SRM University-AP has signed an MoU with JK Srivastava Hynfra PSA Ltd to advance research, innovation and skill development in green hydrogen technologies. As part of the collaboration, the two institutions will establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Hydrogen Technologies at SRM University- Andhra Pradesh to promote cutting-edge research, academic collaboration and industry-oriented innovation.

The initiative supports Andhra Pradesh’s target of producing 1.5 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) of green hydrogen by 2030. The planned roadmap includes research on hydrogen storage and transportation, development of hydrogen-powered fuel cell-based trains, buses and trucks, establishment of 5 GW electrolyser manufacturing capacity, and efforts to reduce the overall cost of green hydrogen.

The MoU builds on the momentum generated at the Green Hydrogen Summit held at SRM University-AP in July 2025, where Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu announced the Green Hydrogen Valley–Andhra Pradesh initiative. The summit also designated SRM University-AP as the state nodal agency for executing advanced hydrogen research under the project, in alignment with the National Green Hydrogen Mission.

In its nodal role, SRM University-AP will spearhead early-stage green hydrogen development through the CoE, creation of foundational R&D capabilities and collaborative platforms in partnership with JK Srivastava Hynfra.

The Centre will focus on high-efficiency electrolysis catalysts, alternative water sources including direct seawater electrolysis, advanced hydrogen storage solutions and emerging applications such as hydrogen-powered data centres.

The partnership gains further significance against JK Srivastava Group’s proposed ₹35,000-crore investment to set up a green ammonia facility near Mulapeta in Srikakulam district, expected to be operational by 2029 and generate over 10,000 jobs.

Industry leaders and academics at the event highlighted Andhra Pradesh’s Integrated Clean Energy policy and the state’s long-term net-zero goals, underlining the role of strong government–industry–academia collaboration in accelerating India’s clean energy transition.
