GAIL partners Accelera for green energy transition in India

As India continues to take strides in the clean energy generation, leading natural gas conglomerate GAIL (India) Ltd. has signed an MoU with Accelera, the zero-emissions business segment of Cummins Inc. Under the new collaboration, GAIL aims to drive advancements in sustainable energy and energy transition technologies across India.

By leveraging the expertise of Accelera in new energy solutions and extensive natural gas infrastructure of GAIL, the partnership will explore opportunities in emerging energy sectors, including hydrogen production, blending, transportation, and storage. GAIL says that it has already accelerated its Scope 1 and Scope 2 Net Zero targets from 2040 to 2035, underscoring its commitment to sustainability.

Cummins Inc., a global leader in power solutions, is dedicated to supporting customers through the energy transition with a broad portfolio that includes advanced diesel, natural gas, electric, and hybrid powertrains, as well as power generation systems, batteries, electrified power systems, hydrogen production technologies, and fuel cells.

GAIL recently commissioned a 10 MW Green Hydrogen unit at its Vijaipur plant in Guna, Madhya Pradesh, utilizing an electrolyzer from Accelera by Cummins. Additionally, through its joint venture Avantika, GAIL conducted pilot-scale studies in Indore’s CGD network, initially blending 2% hydrogen into CNG/PNG and later scaling up to 5% in the PNG network.

In alignment with its energy transition strategy, GAIL has already established a 5 TPD compressed biogas (CBG) plant in Ranchi and plans to set up 26 more plants across India within the next 3-4 years. GAIL also has a joint venture with Leafiniti Bioenergy to develop 10 more CBG plants.

Moreover, GAIL has formed a JV to establish a 500 KLPD grain-based ethanol plant in Rajasthan and has partnered with Coal India to produce synthetic natural gas in West Bengal.
