CEID to begin Brahmapuram CBG plant construction in days to come

As the country is striving strongly towards the biogas production to be self-reliant in terms of energy and reduce its import bills, the launch of the construction of Compressed Biogas Plant (CBG) at the BPCL-Kochi Refineries Centre is scheduled for this week.

The CBG plant will be situated on the Brahmapuram campus of the Kochi Corporation. Due to the prevailing model code of conduct for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, there won’t be a formal inauguration ceremony.

Valued at Rs 80 crore, this project is anticipated to provide a sustainable solution to waste management challenges faced by the Kochi Corporation and neighbouring local bodies. The plant will utilize food waste to produce CBG for consumption by the Refineries, with the bio-manure generated being marketed by the company.

The Centre for Entrepreneurship and Industries Development (CEID), a biogas conglomerate based in Punjab’s Fazilka, has secured the bid for establishing the CBG plant. CEID has initiated preparatory work on the campus.

CEID is now clearing and levelling the project site to finalize the plant’s layout. Structural design activities are also set to commence shortly. As per sources from CEID, the formal execution of the project will commence in days to come.

CEID was awarded the project in the middle of this month. The company representatives have already visited the site to mobilize resources for the plant’s setup, as per Refineries sources.

BPCL has urged the State government to expedite necessary approvals for commencing the work. The Corporation has taken steps to clear legacy waste at the site, and a tripartite agreement involving the State government, BPCL-Kochi Refineries, and CEID is required for the plant’s establishment. CEID has been allotted one year to complete the setup, according to an official.

Interestingly, the company has requested subsidized power rates for establishing the unit, while the Corporation is expected to supply the requisite waste for the project.

Recently, CEID had built a CBG plant for ONGC in Gorakhpur that was inaugurated by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
