In a significant milestone for India’s clean energy sector, CEID Consultants and Engineering has successfully commissioned the country’s first Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant that supplies gas directly to a City Gas Distribution (CGD) network through a “steel pipeline.”
As per reports, the new facility is located in Batala in the Gurdaspur district of Punjab and the MEPL Bio-energy facility is now injecting CBG directly into Gujarat Gas’ grid. This has eliminated the need for traditional cascade transportation via cylinders and drastically reducing logistics costs.
The initiative represents a major step forward in India’s mission to build a sustainable, gas-based economy and promote decentralised clean energy production. The plant caters to both Piped Natural Gas (PNG) consumers and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) retailers, while integrating smoothly with Gujarat Gas’ existing distribution infrastructure.
This achievement follows CEID’s earlier success with MDPE pipeline offtake at the same facility. The newly commissioned steel pipeline marks a transformative step for the CBG sector, enabling continuous, real-time, and safer transmission of CBG.
It also sets a new benchmark for developing standardised protocols in pipeline design, metering, gas quality control, and safety procedures.
Prince Gandhi, Founder & CEO of CEID Consultants mentioned that the transition to steel pipeline injection brings unmatched scalability, efficiency, and regulatory compliance to India’s growing CBG ecosystem. He also said that the new model paves the way for similar CBG projects across the country in alignment with the government’s SATAT programme.
CEID has emerged as one of the important CBG player credited with some important projects including the ones at Moradabad, Brahmapuram and Gorakhpur.
