Polysmart to invest $60 million in Nigeria’s biggest plastic recycling project

Nigeria’s rPET recycling major Polysmart Packaging Limited has announced a landmark $60 million expansion plan by constructing the largest state-of-the-art plastic recycling facility in Nigeria.  Polysmart is focused on transforming post-consumer plastic waste into high-quality recycled materials and sustainable packaging solutions.

Polysmart held that the first phase due to be commissioned at the end of March 2026 and the final phase in July 2026. This unprecedented investment underscores the company’s commitment to driving circular economy, creating massive employment opportunities, enabling brands reduce their carbon footprint, meet global sustainability standards and mitigating the environmental crisis caused by plastic pollution.

The new facility will feature world-class technologies like Sorema Plastic Recycling System, Tomra Sorting Solution and two (2) units of Erema Vacunite 2621T V-LeaN SSP to process multiple polymer streams, with a focus on producing high-quality, food-grade rPET (recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate) resin and flakes which conform with the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) agency regulations, as well as non-food grade HDPE, LDPE, and PP materials.

“This is a transformative moment for Nigeria’s green economy,” said Wasiu Abolaji Balogun, the MD/CEO of Polysmart Packaging Limited. “The $60 million dollar investment is not just in machinery and infrastructure; it’s an investment in the human capital of Nigeria. We anticipate generating thousands of new direct and indirect jobs across the waste collection, sorting, technical and operational segments of the value chain, providing dignified and sustainable livelihoods for our people.”

With a strong commitment to environmental sustainability, innovation, and operational excellence, Polysmart says it plays a pivotal role in reducing plastic pollution while supporting the manufacturing, FMCG, and packaging industries with reliable, locally sourced raw materials. The Company continues to expand its capacity, strengthen its waste recovery network, and invest in state-of-the-art technology to meet rising domestic and regional demand for recycled materials.
