BMC gets three bids for ₹2,368 crore Deonar biomining project

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has received three bids for the bioremediation project aimed at treating 185 lakh tonnes of legacy waste at the Deonar landfill. The Deonar landfill is one of Mumbai’s most pressing environmental concerns and the biomining project is worth Rs 2,368 crore.

The cleanup project for three years and crucial for paving the way for the Dharavi Redevelopment Project.

Bids have been submitted by Navayuga Engineering Company Ltd., H.G. Infra Engineering Ltd., and Re Sustainability Ltd. Talking about these companies, Re Sustainability Ltd is already engaged in BMC’s waste-to-energy (WTE) operations at Deonar. While Navayuga and H.G. Infra bring strong infrastructure expertise, Re Sustainability offers domain experience in waste management.

The BMC had floated the tender on May 14, aiming to clear 2,300 tonnes of legacy waste daily using 1,200 vehicles. A pre-bid meeting held on May 23 drew queries from 21 companies, prompting the civic body to extend the bid submission deadline thrice. The final date closed on July 4 and the bids would open on July 18.

The Deonar landfill, operational since 1927 and spread over 120 hectares, has accumulated decades of untreated solid waste. Mumbai generates approximately 6,300 MT of waste each day, with about 10% being dumped at the Deonar landfill. This bioremediation effort is intended to reduce the landfill burden and create space for future urban development.

The parallel WTE project at the site, targeted for completion by October 2025, will process 600 metric tonnes of waste daily and generate 7 MW of power. In February, BMC increased the waste to energy project’s power generation capacity from 4 MW to 7 MW to have great contribution to Mumbai’s clean energy goals.

As per reports, BMC would scrutinize technical proposals, followed by opening financial bids on July 11. The contract will be awarded to the technically qualified bidder offering the lowest quote.

In its last budget, the corporation has made a provision of Rs 300 crore for solid waste management projects which includes setting up a bio-CNG plant at Deonar.
