UP to set up biogas facilities in 300 gaushalas

The Uttar Pradesh Gau Seva Ayog has announced plans to set up biogas plants in more than 300 cow shelters across the state, aiming to integrate livestock protection with clean energy generation and rural employment.

The initiative will employ cow dung and cow urine to produce biogas along with organic manure and other value-added by-products. The biogas project is expected to strengthen cow protection measures while also creating new livelihood opportunities in rural areas.

In December 2024, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath unveiled the state government’s plans to set up compressed biogas plants using cow dung and ‘offering land’ for these green energy initiatives.

Chairman of the Gau Seva Ayog, Shyam Bihari Gupta, has termed the initiative as one that seeks to link cattle protection with a self-reliant rural economy through a scientific and technology-driven approach.

The project is being led by Yashraj Gupta who has partnered with a team of engineers to develop technology-based solutions for cow shelters. Yashraj Gupta recently met officials of the commission in Jalaun district to finalise the implementation plan.

Gupta wants to apply modern technology to cow-based resources that can help significantly enhance rural incomes while contributing to sustainable development.

As per reports, the project will initially be rolled out in cow shelters in Jalaun district, where biogas plants will generate organic manure, bio-CNG and electricity. Following successful implementation, the model will be expanded to more than 300 shelters across Uttar Pradesh.

This would also be promoting industrial use and marketing of products derived from cow urine, dung, milk, curd and ghee.

Gupta held that the Uttar Pradesh government aims to transform cow shelters into centres not only for livestock protection but also for renewable energy and organic manure production, which could help generate employment and improve farmers’ incomes in rural areas.

Recently, the Noida Authority has also been mulling to build a biogas project at its renowned animal shelter with a vision to recycle the waste efficiently.
