Moeve, ENSO collaborate on biomass and biogas development for industry

Spanish energy firm Moeve and biomass- solutions developer ENSO, have collaborated to advance industrial decarbonization by developing energy alternatives that will enable the gradual replacement of fossil fuels.

Moeve and ENSO will offer alternatives for energy-intensive industrial processes in sectors such as chemicals, paper and board, and food and beverage, that intensively use steam and thermal energy and currently rely on generation systems fuelled by coal, natural gas and other fossil fuels.

In addition to transitioning these facilities to models based on advanced biomass, the alliance also opens up new opportunities in the development of renewable gases: from the conversion of biogas plants to biomethane to the potential development of e-fuels (RFNBOs) using biogenic CO2 generated at bioenergy facilities.

Capturing and utilizing this CO2 makes it possible to turn it into a new feedstock. In this area, Moeve may participate as a potential offtaker of the new green molecules produced, complementing ENSO’s capabilities in renewable generation and biogenic carbon capture.

ENSO already has experience with this type of technology integration at its biopower plant in Garray.

An Alliance to Boost Industrial Competitiveness

Elías Hernández, CEO of ENSO, said, “Industry needs solutions that allow it to advance its decarbonization while increasing its competitiveness. We believe both can and should be part of the same equation. Our ability to invest in, build, and operate large-scale bioenergy infrastructure, combined with Moeve’s capabilities and reach, will enable us to turn decarbonization opportunities into real projects that generate savings and long-term value for our customers.”

“Through our ‘Moeve decarbonize’ offering, and building on ENSO’s strong track record, we will provide our industrial customers with a broader range of energy solutions, combining heat, power, and renewable gases in processes where electrification is not always feasible,” said Carlos Aguilera, head of business development, Moeve.

The alliance combines ENSO’s expertise in developing, financing, building, and operating bioenergy projects with Moeve’s capabilities in energy supply and in the development and marketing of green molecules.

The agreement also comes at an important time for cogeneration in Spain, ahead of the upcoming auctions planned for this technology. This new investment cycle may represent an opportunity for many industrial companies to upgrade their generation systems and move toward more efficient, lower-carbon solutions.
