Maruti Suzuki may bring E20 conversion kits as ethanol program runs strong

India’s auto giant Maruti Suzuki is likely to introduce E20 material upgrade kits for vehicles that are 10 to 15 years old, enabling them to run on ethanol-blended fuel. According to reports, the kits are expected to cost between Rs 4,000 and Rs 6,000, depending on the model.

E20 compliance requires replacing specific components such as fuel lines, seals, gaskets, and other metal, rubber, and plastic parts. While the upgrade process is straightforward, additional testing and validation may be necessary for older engines that are no longer in production. Ensuring that modified engines continue to meet emission standards will also be a key challenge.

Other automakers, including two-wheeler manufacturers, are also exploring similar upgrade options. To address concerns over durability and part replacement, the government clarified that most vehicles face no issues with drivability, startability, or material compatibility when using E20 fuel.

In rare cases, certain rubber parts and gaskets in older models may need earlier replacement compared to non-blended fuel use. Officials emphasized that such replacements are inexpensive, usually required only once in a vehicle’s lifetime, and can be carried out easily at any authorized workshop.

The move is expected to ease the transition to higher ethanol blends, offering cost-effective solutions to vehicle owners while supporting India’s clean energy and fuel diversification goals.

India has already achieved the 20% ethanol blending target with the petrol well ahead of the schedule and 27% blending target seems to be on the anvil. The Union Ministers have requested the auto industry to raise their efforts to make the shift successful.
