Mahindra looks at greener future with E30 flex-fuel vehicles

In a significant push toward sustainable transportation in the country, auto giant Mahindra has announced that its upcoming vehicles will be compatible with ethanol blends beyond E20, moving toward E30+ fuel readiness. The move aligns with India’s vision of reducing fossil fuel dependency and promoting greener transportation.

At the heart of this transition is Mahindra’s newly developed NU-IQ modular platform, designed to support multiple body styles and a variety of powertrain options. This platform will also form the basis for SUVs powered by flex-fuel engines capable of running on E30 and higher-rated ethanol blends.

Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has also urged the automobiles companies in India to make cars that could run absolutely on ethanol (E100) calling ethanol as the ‘fuel of future.’

India currently promotes E20 fuel, and debates around vehicle compatibility have intensified among car owners. However, with the government’s roadmap to achieve 30% ethanol blending in petrol (E30) by 2030, Mahindra is preparing ahead of schedule. Engineers are reworking engines to handle higher ethanol levels, incorporating ethanol material sensors to monitor concentration in real time, as well as fuel rail and injector heaters to ensure smooth cold starts. The goal is to make vehicles future-ready, even for blends up to 100% ethanol.

The Auto Expo 2025 further highlighted the industry’s shift toward flex-fuel technology. Although Mahindra has not announced a launch timeline for its flex-fuel SUVs, several automakers showcased ethanol-compatible models.

Hyundai displayed the Creta 1.0 Flex Fuel, Tata introduced the Punch E85, Maruti presented the Wagon R Flex Fuel, and Toyota highlighted its petrol-electric hybrid Innova Hycross, designed to run on E20 and beyond.

Mahindra’s proactive move signals growing competition in India’s green mobility sector. As ethanol adoption accelerates, the automaker aims to position itself at the forefront of innovation—offering customers vehicles that are not only eco-friendly but also aligned with the nation’s long-term energy goals.
