Yogi Adityanath inaugurates Uttar Pradesh’s first green hydrogen plant built by Torrent

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday inaugurated the state’s first green hydrogen plant, set up by Torrent Group companies Torrent Power and Torrent Gas in Gorakhpur. The facility, with an annual production capacity of 72 tonnes, will blend green hydrogen with natural gas in Torrent Gas’ city gas distribution (CGD) network at concentrations of up to 2 per cent.

Torrent held that the blended fuel will be supplied to households, CNG stations, and industrial units through the existing natural gas pipeline network. This makes Torrent’s Gorakhpur facility not only the first green hydrogen plant in Uttar Pradesh but also the largest hydrogen–natural gas blending project in India’s CGD sector.

Torrent Gas currently operates the CGD network in Gorakhpur, Kushinagar, and Sant Kabirnagar districts, with authorization from the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB). The company has already established 32 CNG stations, and supplies piped natural gas (PNG) to over 12,000 homes, along with 73 commercial and industrial establishments in the region.

Highlighting the significance of the project, CM Adityanath said that Uttar Pradesh has set a target of producing 1 million metric tonnes per annum (mmtpa) of green hydrogen under a dedicated state policy to attract investments. Greener energy with lower emissions is crucial for India’s progress. He also stated that with the development of this plant, green hydrogen has entered the daily lives of common people—reaching their kitchens and vehicles.

Torrent Group Director Jinal Mehta described the commissioning as a landmark for the company’s clean energy roadmap and said, “The commissioning of Torrent Power’s Green Hydrogen plant in Gorakhpur and its integration into Torrent Gas’ City Gas Distribution infrastructure in Gorakhpur, is a milestone in this endeavor. It marks the culmination of the first initiative in our long-term vision of setting up large scale green hydrogen plants in the country for various use cases including for blending with natural gas in the CGD network.”

Uttar Pradesh is a promise for sturdy green energy sector in near future. Earlier this year, Ko Osada, Vice-Governor of Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan, met Yogi Adityanath and reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening ties between Yamanashi and Uttar Pradesh by developing a ‘Center of Excellence’ for green hydrogen.
