Suzuki commissions 1.5 TPD biogas plant in Banaskantha

Suzuki Motor Corporation and its Indian subsidiary Suzuki R&D Center India (SRDI) have inaugurated the 1.5 TPD biogas plant at Bhukhala in Banaskantha district of Gujarat. Suzuki has reinforced its commitment to sustainable mobility and rural development.

The Banas Suzuki Biogas Plant is spread across 27,000 square metres and is designed to process around 100 tonnes of cow dung per day. Suzuki held that the CBG plant will generate sufficient compressed biogas (CBG) to fuel approximately 850 CNG vehicles daily.

In September 2023, SRDI signed an agreement with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and Banas Dairy to develop five biogas plants. Of these, the Agthala and Bhukhala plants are now operational.

In addition to biogas, the Bhukhala facility will also produce and sell organic fertiliser derived from the residual slurry after gas generation.

This marks the second operational biogas plant of Suzuki in India, following the commissioning of the Agthala plant in December 2025. Both facilities are part of Suzuki’s broader initiative to integrate renewable energy solutions with India’s dairy ecosystem.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat; Shankar Chaudhary, Chairman of Banas Dairy and Speaker of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly; and Kenichiro Toyofuku, Managing Officer and Executive General Manager at Suzuki.

Biogas, considered a carbon-neutral fuel, can be used in CNG vehicles, which account for nearly 20 per cent of India’s passenger car market. Suzuki has said that such projects not only help reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also improve energy self-reliance, generate local employment, and enhance rural incomes through the organised procurement of cattle dung.

SRDI has also signed a tripartite agreement a week ago with National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and Banas Dairy to develop a 75 MTPD cow dung–based biogas plant in Banaskantha district. Before that, Suzuki Motor Fund has agreed to invest in Sistema.bio to bolster biogas across India.
