A bigger task ahead in Renewables
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Assam Bio-Ethanol Plant, which boasts a production capacity of 49,000 tonnes per annum of ethanol. The announcement was made during a press conference where CM Sarma outlined the Prime Minister’s upcoming visit to Assam, coinciding with the centenary celebrations of music legend Dr. Bhupen Hazarika.
Sarma confirmed that Prime Minister Modi has assured his presence at the event marking Dr. Hazarika’s 100th birth anniversary. He also expressed hope that the Reserve Bank of India would commemorate the occasion with the release of a special coin in Hazarika’s honor.
In addition to inaugurating the Bio-Ethanol Plant, PM Modi is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for the Rs 5,700 crore Guwahati Ring Road project, a major infrastructure initiative aimed at easing traffic congestion and boosting regional connectivity.
Highlighting Assam’s growing investment prospects, CM Sarma mentioned discussions held during the recent Advantage Assam 2.0 Summit, particularly with the Adani Group, regarding a proposed investment of Rs 50,000 crore in the state. He further revealed that by December 2025, project works amounting to Rs 1 lakh crore are expected to gain significant momentum.
The Chief Minister also announced the establishment of the Assam Fertilizer and Chemical Company Limited, which will have a production capacity of 12.7 lakh metric tonnes (MT), signaling another major boost for the state’s industrial sector.
CM Sarma emphasized that Assam is on a transformative path, with major investments and infrastructural projects poised to reshape its economic landscape.
The Assam state cabinet recently approved a production-linked incentive (PLI) to give boost to the production of grain-based ethanol in the state. The government will offer an incentive of Rs 2 per litre for a three-year period. Under the Assam Ethanol Production Promotion Policy 2021, the government has approved incentivization of production of ethanol from all feedstocks permitted under NEP 2018. The state offers capital & interest subsidies besides many other benefits for setting up & operating ethanol plants.
