Tata Motors Leads Q2 EV Sales As Mahindra, JSW MG Gain Ground

India’s electric vehicle (EV) market has delivered its strongest quarter yet. EV sales reached 837,453 units in the second quarter of 2026, a 52.3% jump over the 549,900 units recorded in the same period last year, according to ministry registration data.

The data revealed that 3,05,678 EV registrations were on the Vahan dashboard in June alone. With this, EVs saw a monthly record following 2.75 lakh in May, suggesting the momentum is accelerating into the second half.

What makes the number remarkable is the headwind it overcame. The GST 2.0 reforms of late 2025 substantially reduced the prices of internal combustion vehicles, widening the price gap EVs must bridge.

That sales still grew at over 50% suggests the market has moved past subsidy arithmetic: buyers are choosing electric for running costs, product quality and, increasingly, because the charging anxiety of earlier years is fading.

Four Segments, One Direction

The growth is unusually broad-based. Electric passenger vehicles nearly doubled, with retail sales of 82,011 units in the quarter, up 88.7% year-on-year.

Tata Motors led with 31,070 units, but the story is the chasing pack: Mahindra almost doubled to 19,389 units, JSW MG delivered 15,851, Maruti Suzuki’s newly launched eVitara added 4,741, and VinFast’s India entry contributed 3,874. A market that was a near-monopoly two years ago now has genuine multi-brand competition — the surest sign of maturity.

Two- and three-wheelers continue to do the volume heavy-lifting, together accounting for the bulk of registrations, with electric three-wheelers cementing their position as the workhorse of urban goods and passenger movement. Commercial EVs, from a small base, are compounding fastest of all as fleet operators chase lower total cost of ownership.

Why It Matters Beyond the Showroom

EVs grew 52% in the same year that tax reform made petrol vehicles cheaper. That is what a tipping point looks like.

Every percentage point of electrification compounds into public goods: cleaner air in cities that dominate global pollution rankings, a lighter crude import bill at a time of volatile oil markets, and anchor demand for the domestic battery ecosystem that India is racing to build — from the ACC PLI programme to the wave of cell and pack investments announced this year.

The composition of demand is shifting in encouraging ways as well. Growth is no longer confined to the metros: registrations from tier-2 and tier-3 markets are rising as products at accessible price points multiply and resale-value fears ease. For households, the arithmetic is increasingly simple — an electric two-wheeler running on rooftop solar or cheap night-time power costs a fraction per kilometre of its petrol equivalent, turning the EV from an environmental statement into a family budget decision.

The watch items for the second half are familiar. EV penetration, at around 8-10% of monthly vehicle sales, still leaves an enormous ICE fleet growing alongside; charging infrastructure remains uneven beyond the top cities; and the two-wheeler segment’s sensitivity to financing costs makes it vulnerable to any credit tightening. But the Q2 print settles the direction-of-travel debate. Electric mobility in India is no longer a policy project — it is a consumer market, and it is compounding at 50% a year.
