JSW Energy commissions country’s biggest green hydrogen plant

JSW Energy has commissioned its first green hydrogen plant, marking a major milestone in India’s clean energy transition. In a regulatory filing, the JSW Group company said the newly operational facility is the country’s largest green hydrogen manufacturing unit to date.

Located in Vijaynagar, Karnataka, the plant will produce 3,800 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, along with 30,000 tonnes of oxygen, which will be supplied directly to the adjacent JSW Steel complex for use in low-carbon steelmaking. The project forms part of JSW Energy’s 6,800-tonne annual allocation under the Solar Energy Corporation of India’s Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) scheme.

Sharad Mahendra, Joint Managing Director and CEO of JSW Energy, called the commissioning a significant step in India’s pursuit of decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors. “The project underscores our commitment to supporting India’s low-carbon growth by enabling green steel production,” he stated.

Looking ahead, JSW Energy has also signed an MoU with JSW Steel to gradually scale up supply to 85,000–90,000 tonnes of green hydrogen, along with 720,000 tonnes of green oxygen annually by 2030. The expansion aligns with global market pressures, especially from the European Union, which is pushing for cleaner industrial production, and with India’s national target of producing 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen per year by 2030.

JSW Energy currently has 30.5 GW of locked-in power generation capacity, including 13.3 GW operational and 12.5 GW under construction. The company also holds 29.4 GWh of energy storage capacity, comprising pumped hydro and battery storage systems, strengthening its long-term clean energy portfolio.

JSW Energy Ltd, a leading private sector power producer in India, is part of the $23 billion JSW Group.
