India’s biggest CBG plant to be operationalized this year in Barsana, Uttar Pradesh

Sang Ratnam, Chairman and MD of TotalEnergies Gas & Power, has announced that the Barsana compressed biogas (CBG) project that its building with Adani Total Gas (ATGL) will be put to operations in 2024. He also said that the CBG plant will be the largest in Asia.

Sang Ratnam visited the CBG biogas project and was accompanied by Adani Total Gas Ltd (ATGL) CEO Suresh Manglani and TotalEnergies VP Biogas Olivier Guerrini.  The CBG project is co-located at the Shri Mataji Gaushala in Barsana, Mathura. The biogas expert team from Paris – Johann Thevenard and Bernard Prost – were also present at the CBG plant site which is under development.

Taking to social media, Ratnam held, “Our visit was also blessed by the rare presence of Shri Ramesh Babaji Maharaj, the reclusive founder of the Shri Mataji Gaushala.”

TotalEnergies India CMD mentioned that under this unique social partnership between the revered Gaushala and ATGL, the Barsana project will produce compressed biogas (CBG) by digesting a mix of cow manure, paddy straw and press mud sourced from the local community.

“When all phases of the project are completed, the Barsana CBG plant will have a final production capacity of 43 tons per day becoming the largest biogas project in India and likely one of the largest in Asia,” said Ratnam.

“The project will contribute towards India’s target of generating 15 MTPA of CBG by 2024. We were pleased to observe that Phase1 of the Barsana project will soon start commissioning its first 3 digesters and is expected to be producing 10 tons per day of CBG this year. We are proud of this pioneering project with Adani, and bravo to all the teams and experts contributing to the success of this landmark project!” he added.
