GAIL secures concession agreement for CBG project in Bengaluru

GAIL (India) Limited has signed a Tripartite Concession Agreement with the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) and Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) for the establishment of a Compressed Bio Gas (CBG) plant. The CBG project will come up at the KCDC area in Haralakunte Village, Bengaluru South Taluk.

As per the agreement, the Greater Bengaluru Authority will allocate 18 acres of land on a permissive-use basis for the CBG project, while BSWML will provide 300 tonnes of segregated municipal solid waste each day. This waste will be processed to generate around 12.6 tonnes of CBG daily.

As per reports, the CBG facility is expected to produce approximately 22 tonnes of Fermented Organic Manure (FOM) per day in addition, contributing to sustainable farming practices and a circular economy.

The concession will remain valid for 25 years from the commissioning date of the project, ensuring long-term collaboration among the participating agencies.

This initiative represents a significant stride toward sustainable waste management and clean energy generation in Bengaluru. It aligns with the SATAT Scheme and the Swachh Bharat Mission of the Centre thus promoting greener cities and a more sustainable future.

To facilitate the bio-CNG project of GAIL, the Revenue Department and Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Ltd will jointly conduct a survey and hand over the land with proper maps. Meanwhile, the Urban Development Department’s Additional Chief Secretary has been empowered to address any operational or implementation challenges.

GAIL has vowed to develop 25 CBG projects to fasten the green energy development in the country. It has an operational one in Ranchi. Recently, GAIL has entered into a joint venture with TruAlt Bioenergy Ltd to accelerate the development of India’s Compressed biogas or bio-CNG sector under which In its first phase, the JV will roll out six greenfield plants, each with a capacity of 12 tonnes per day.
