TEXTILE RECYCLING: UAE to recycle 220,000+ tonnes of textile waste every year

The UAE has launched the national ‘Naseej’ initiative to recycle more than 220,000 tonnes of textile waste every year, reinforcing its commitment to building a circular economy. Announced under the directives of UAE leadership, the Naseej initiative aims to transform discarded textiles into valuable economic resources through recycling and remanufacturing.

Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Tourism, highlighted the new program during its first community event in Abu Dhabi. He said that textile waste can be repurposed across industries such as furniture production and construction materials, improving resource efficiency and sustainability.

The Naseej initiative is designed to create new opportunities for investors and entrepreneurs by encouraging innovative industrial and development projects. It seeks to establish an integrated circular ecosystem in the textile sector, where waste from one stage becomes input for another, aligning with global best practices.

Bin Touq categorically mentioned that the UAE is focused on developing a comprehensive circular economy system, supported by policies that link various stages of production within geographically clustered industrial zones. This approach is expected to strengthen the national economy, reduce carbon emissions, and lower reliance on imports.

The Naseej program also prioritises public engagement through community events that raise awareness about textile waste and promote sustainable practices. Future plans include enhancing infrastructure for collection, sorting, and recycling, alongside research and pilot projects to scale circular solutions nationwide.

Through coordinated policy, industry collaboration, and community participation, Naseej aims to position the UAE as a global leader in sustainable textile management.
