IIT Hyderabad’s PuREnergy Launches Affordable Lithium Batteries

Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad incubated startup PuREnergy will today commercially launch its newly developed lithium batteries at the Renewable Energy India Expo 2018, being held at Greater Noida.

Founded in 2016 by Dr. Nishanth Dongari, Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, IIT Hyderabad, PuREnergy works in designing and assembly of Lithium batteries but with a wider scope of applications, like in various fields from agriculture to aerospace.

The team is banking on its battery design, based on their idea of choosing application specific cell chemistry which offers a lower total cost of ownership, and an efficient thermal management systems which is expected to increase the lifecycle of the batteries by atleast 50 per cent for Indian conditions.

“We plan to make the batteries available at economical prices based on the design capabilities and in-house product development compared to the one’s in the market, which are expensive Nishanth said in a press release.

“We are also in close discussion with few defence laboratories for our battery applications in tanks, missiles, and communication Equipment. They need to work under harsh environmental conditions, reduce the weight by four times compared to lead acid technology and deliver high discharge currents, which is to be achieved by doping of anodes and cathodes,” he added.

The company also offers in-house testing and service facilities to achieve better warranty period. The products are currently available in 0.2 KWH to 2 KWH (Agriculture Drones, Automobile), 2 to 20 KWH (Aerospace, Electric Autos & Carriers, Telecom and Household), and 50 to 500 KWH (Residential Societies, data centers and industrial entities).

The startup is one of the leading developers of solar hybrid systems which combine solar PV with battery back-up and grid synchronization. A statement from IIT Hyderabad added that it has served more than 100 clients in sectors as varied as Telangana Government, pharmaceuticals, real estate, hospitals and non-governmental organizations at the national level.

Rohit Vadera, Chief Executive Officer, PuREnergy, said, “We have already deployed products in our own solar hybrid projects. With the tremendous increase of excess solar power supply in the day time, the demand for MWH storage solutions is increasing to stabilize the Grid across 24 x 7”.

Both the founders are from alumni of IIT Mumbai.
