Delhi CM Rekha Gupta announces 13 new biogas-integrated Gaushalas under ‘Zero Waste Model’

The Delhi government has unveiled an ambitious plan to establish 13 new gaushalas (cow shelters) across the capital, incorporating biogas plants and solar energy systems as part of a modern “Zero Waste Model.” This initiative, announced by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, aims to enhance cow protection, sustainability, and environmental management.

Each gaushala will feature biogas facilities designed to manage cow dung efficiently and convert it into renewable energy. The project will also integrate solar power, advanced sanitation systems, and veterinary hospitals to provide modern care for the cattle.

Six new biogas plants will be operational within the next two years, using cow dung to generate clean energy and improve waste management in the capital.

As per reports, the government has identified suitable land parcels in each district to set up at least one modern gaushala, ensuring that the facilities are spread across Delhi. The new shelters will provide sufficient space for cattle, clean and hygienic environments, advanced healthcare facilities, and stress-free living conditions for cows.

Currently, overcrowded gaushalas are impacting animal health and care standards. The introduction of biogas plants will help reduce pollution by converting organic waste into valuable energy, promoting sustainable waste management practices.

Additionally, the Delhi government plans to connect gaushalas with the city’s ridge and forest areas, allowing cattle access to open, natural grazing environments. This initiative will improve animal health and mobility while promoting eco-friendly livestock management.

The government has allocated Rs 100 crore for the redevelopment of dairy colonies, focusing on upgrading infrastructure, improving sanitation, and enhancing living conditions for dairy workers. During the transition period, the government will continue supporting existing gaushalas with veterinary services, medical supplies, and regular maintenance.

Authorities have recently approved plans to develop biogas projects in Ghazipur and Civil Lines. The MCD and NDDB have planned 10 biogas plants to make dairies ‘sustainable’ in the national capital.

The commitment to integrating biogas and renewable energy within the gaushala model highlights Delhi’s vision for sustainable and self-sustaining cattle care systems.
