DMRC To Get Power From REWA Solar Plant In Two Months

In a project deemed as the country’s first, the DMRC (Delhi Metro Rail Corporation) is about to receive power from the Madhya Pradesh based REWA Ultra Mega Solar Ltd (RUMSL) in the next two months. This is the first project to supply power to an inter-state open access customer.

The DMRC signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with the RUMSL to get green power from the latter to run its trains in the national capital region.

As per the Madhya Pradesh Renewable Energy Principal Secretary Manu Srivastava, the DMRC would get around 25% of the total power generated by the RUMSL, which would meet around 90% of DMRC’s power demand and is estimated to save Rs.1400 crore for the Delhi Metro in the next 25 years.

The MP Power Management Company Ltd, which supplies power to the state discoms, will get the remaining 75% of  power produced from the Rewa solar power plant.

For DMRC , the cost per unit of energy from the RUMSL will be  Rs.3.67 per unit as compared to the current cost incurred by the company at Rs.7 per unit.

The cost savings are set to be augmented with its own plans for close to 50 MW of solar rooftop installations across its stations, a target it has set for itself by 2021.

As of now, the Delhi Metro has a network of about 288 Km with 208 stations. The lines cross the boundaries of Delhi to connect Noida and Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, Gurgaon and Faridabad in Haryana.

RUMSL, on the other hand, is a joint venture between the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) and Madhya Pradesh Urja Vikas Nigam (MPUVN) which has roped in private players in setting up the plant, according to Srivastava who is also the managing director of MPUVN. The plant’s three units are to produce 250MW of energy for less than Rs.3. Moreover, the 750MW project in Rewa district, spread over an area of 1,590 acres, is among the largest single-site solar power plants in the world.
