After Tycan, German Automaker Porsche Confirms A fully Electric Macan

Porsche continuing its path towards electric cars albeit in the luxury segment has announced that its best selling car Macan will come in an electric variation soon. Porsche has sold close to 90,000 of them in 2018, beating out the Cayenne SUV and the Panamera sedan.

The Macan EV will be the third all-electric car in Porsche’s lineup. Porsche is set to start making the Taycan sedan (which is the final production version of the company’s Mission E concept) at the end of 2019. A crossover version of the Taycan, called the Cross Turismo, will go into production in 2020.

“Electromobility and Porsche go together perfectly; not just because they share a high-efficiency approach, but especially because of their sporty character,” Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Board of Management of Porsche AG, said. “By 2022 we will be investing more than six billion euros in electric mobility, and by 2025 50 percent of all new Porsche vehicles could have an electric drive system. Nevertheless, over the next ten years we will focus on a drive mix consisting of even further optimized petrol engines, plug-in hybrid models, and purely electrically operated sports cars. Our aim is to take a pioneering role in technology, and for this reason we will continue to consistently align the company with the mobility of the future.”

Porsche didn’t announce any further details about the electric Macan, other than it will share the same 800V charging system being used in the Taycan and the Cross Turismo. That means customers can expect really fast charge times, with the ability to add some 250 miles of range in just about 15 minutes (at compatible Porsche charging stations, of course).

The next generation of the Macan will be manufactured at the company’s Leipzig site thus will use its existing production line to produce fully electric vehicles. Denoting its flexibility and efficiency the company added that this model will be based on the PPE architecture (Premium Platform Electric) developed in collaboration with Audi AG.
