West Bengal’s Chandannagar Corporation to build biogas plant

The Chandannagar Corporation has embarked on a proposal to establish a biogas plant, spurred by the realization that the collected biodegradable waste from 33 municipal wards in the West Bengal city was substantial enough to sustain such a facility. Under the auspices of the Nirmal Bangla scheme, the biogas project was submitted for review to the relevant department of the state government.

Mayor Ram Chakraborty of the Chandannagar Corporation announced that the civil body has received approval from the West Bengal state government to proceed with the biogas project.

The corporation has finalized the project’s land area, tenders have been issued, and its implementation is imminent. The initiative will involve the collection of biodegradable waste from the Chandannagar Corporation area, Chinsurah municipality, and surrounding panchayat areas.

In addition, private biogas plants have expressed interest in participating in the comprehensive project. The biogas generation process involves the utilization of an anaerobic digester, designed to convert biodegradable kitchen waste into biogas.

Mayor Chakraborty emphasized that the establishment of the biogas plant would lead to substantial cost savings for the Chandannagar Corporation, previously allocated for waste management across various areas, posing health risks to residents. He further highlighted that the involvement of private biogas plants would contribute to revenue generation for the corporation.

The establishment of such plants holds the potential to become revenue-generating assets for numerous municipalities and gram panchayats in the district. The produced biogas can find applications in both household and commercial settings.

WBREDA has received the sanction from MNRE, Govt. of India 18000 numbers of Domestic Type Biogas Plant for the state of West Bengal in the financial year 2011 – 12, which will be implemented by WBREDA. Out of 18,000 nos., approximate 11,000 nos. installations have been completed in the State of West Bengal.
