Waga Energy secures €128 million for biomethane expansion across Europe

French green technology company Waga Energy has secured a €128 million financing agreement to accelerate the development of biomethane projects across Europe. The funding, arranged through a consortium of leading financial institutions, will support both operational and upcoming renewable energy initiatives.

The long-term senior debt financing has been raised at the level of Waga Assets 3, a wholly owned subsidiary of Waga Energy. The lender group includes major financial players such as Crédit Agricole CIB, Société Générale, BNP Paribas, and ING Bank, along with several other participating institutions. The deal has been structured as a Green Loan, ensuring that the proceeds are dedicated to environmentally sustainable projects.

The funds will primarily be used to refinance a portfolio of nearly 20 Wagabox units already in operation. Additionally, it will finance projects currently under construction in France, Spain, and Italy, while also supporting the development of new projects across Europe.

Jean-Michel Thibaud, Group CFO and Deputy General Manager of Waga Energy, said, “This transaction marks a new milestone in the financing of Waga Energy. It is based on a dual innovation: on the one hand, a structure combining the refinancing of operating assets, the financing of projects under construction and a tranche dedicated to projects not yet contracted; on the other hand, it is our first multi-country portfolio financing, covering assets located in France, Spain and Italy.”

About Waga Energy

Waga Energy specialises in producing renewable natural gas (RNG), also known as biomethane, by upgrading landfill gas through its patented WAGABOX® technology. This process captures and purifies gas emissions from landfill sites and injects them directly into gas grids, offering a clean alternative to fossil fuels.

Currently, the company operates 37 RNG production units across France, Spain, Canada, and the United States, with a total installed capacity exceeding 2 TWh annually. Furthermore, 20 additional production units are under construction worldwide, reinforcing Waga Energy’s growing role in the global energy transition.
