WABAG, PEAK Sustainability inch closer to maiden Bio-CNG project in Ghaziabad

VA Tech Wabag (WABAG) has partnered with PEAK Sustainability Ventures (PEAK) to develop their first bio-CNG plant in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, marking the initial step in their broader waste-to-energy collaboration announced earlier this year. The upcoming facility will be set up at the 70 MLD sewage treatment plant in Dundaheda under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model through a public-private partnership.

In January this year, the two companies had announced to develop 100 such bio-CNG plants at sewage treatment facilities across India and international markets.

The Dundaheda bio-CNG project will be implemented by a newly formed special purpose vehicle, Ghaziabad Bioenergy, jointly owned by WABAG and PEAK.

The plant will harness raw biogas generated at the sewage treatment facility, preventing methane emissions and upgrading it into high-grade renewable Bio-CNG. This cleaner fuel is expected to replace conventional fossil fuels in both transport and industrial sectors. The initiative highlights a circular approach to energy production, turning waste into a valuable resource while supporting India’s transition to cleaner energy systems.

Companies hold that the upcoming bioenergy project also contributes to easing pressure on conventional LNG and CNG supply chains by offering a locally produced alternative.

The project is expected to generate notable environmental and socio-economic gains. Methane, which has a global warming potential nearly 28 times higher than carbon dioxide, will be effectively captured and utilized, significantly lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Over its lifecycle, the plant is projected to reduce around 250,000 metric tonnes of carbon emissions. Commercial operations are anticipated to begin within a year.
