Verdus launches biomass conversion technology for carbon-negative farming

A New Zealand-based company called Verdus Energy & Associates has launched cutting-edge Biomass Conversion Technology (BCT), designed to help dairy and livestock farms move towards carbon-negative operations while generating a wide range of green products.

Developed over 15 years and now in its fifth generation, Verdus said that the modular BCT system applies circular economy principles and energy-neutral processes to transform animal manure and agricultural residues into valuable commodities with minimal environmental impact. Each module—delivered in ten shipping containers—can be assembled in less than a month and is capable of processing 36 tonnes of dry biomass daily, with negligible emissions and zero residual waste.

Unlike large-scale centralized plants, Verdus emphasizes efficiency at a smaller, decentralized scale, making the system suitable for farms, forests, and industrial sites. The technology can handle diverse feedstocks, including cattle manure, poultry litter, crop residues and even municipal solid waste. From these, it can produce over 200 marketable products, ranging from renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to biochar, green fertilisers, organic pesticides, bio-oils, electricity and carbon credits.

For example, biochar is a vital output that offers multiple benefits. Verdus says that each tonne applied to soil can sequester three tonnes of CO₂, while feeding it to cattle can cut methane emissions by up to 22%. Verdus claims its solutions collectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 187%.

The company has already established partnerships with governments, energy firms, waste managers, and primary producers. With more than 20 million tonnes of surplus feedstock available annually in New Zealand and rising global demand for sustainable products, Verdus is planning rapid international expansion.

Kevin Smith, President and COO fo Verdus, confirmed that the technology has been commercially proven, positioning the company at the forefront of the global green transition.

He added, “Version 4.0 has been operating for over two years, producing carbon fuel pellets for a major mining company. Rollout of V5.0 begins in Q4 2025, with production scheduled to start in North America in 2026. Verdus Energy is not just addressing waste – it is creating a new model for resource recovery, climate resilience, and economic regeneration.”
