UTTAR PRADESH: IGL to build Rs 250 crore CBG project in Noida

The Noida Authority, in partnership with Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), has unveiled a major initiative aimed at transforming the city’s waste management system while significantly reducing operational costs. The cost of the project is Rs 250 under and it has received in-principle approval, focuses on setting up a large compressed biogas (CBG) plant to process wet waste generated across the city.

Today, Noida generates about 800 – 1,000 TPD of municipal solid waste which largely remain untreated and recycled.

Under the current agreement, Noida Authority will provide the required land, while IGL will be responsible for the construction, operation, and maintenance of the CBG facility. The plant is designed to process up to 300 tonnes of wet waste per day, ensuring that organic waste no longer accumulates in dumping sites or decays on streets and get converted into clean energy.

The biogas or CBG produced at the plant will be supplied to households through IGL’s existing gas distribution network. This means that waste generated in homes will be recycled and returned as a usable fuel for cooking, creating a sustainable and circular energy ecosystem.

As of now, Noida’s waste is transported to the NTPC waste disposal plant in Astauli, incurring high logistics costs. Estimates suggest that about Rs 5 crore is spent on transportation alone. With the establishment of a local processing facility, these costs will be eliminated, enabling the authority to redirect savings toward other development projects in the city.

In addition to managing wet waste, the Noida Authority is also planning to address dry waste. Preparations are underway to invite expressions of interest (EOIs) from private players for setting up a separate plant dedicated to dry waste processing. This move reflects a comprehensive strategy to make Noida a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable urban center.

A 900 TPD mixed waste-to-green coal (torrefied charcoal) plant is already being developed by NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam (NVVN). In this 600 TPD area is allocated for Noida and 300 TPD for Greater Noida. This plant is expected to be commissioned by March 2026.

Additionally, six decentralised waste-to-energy units, each with a capacity of 40 TPD—comprising 25 TPD bio-methanation and 15 TPD material recovery—are being set up across Noida.

Together with the proposed 300 TPD plant, these projects are expected to significantly reduce landfill dependency, curb emissions, and promote scientific waste processing.
