A day after the Uttar Pradesh Gau Seva Commission disclosed plans to develop biogas plants across villages of every district in the state, the administration of Ghazipur district that it would instal 1,000 new biogas units across cow shelters.
The announcement was made by Gau Seva Commission Chairman Shyam Bihari Gupta during a review meeting held at Ghazipur’s Vikas Bhawan. He said that the move would ensure scientific management of cattle waste, enhance the production of renewable energy, and create new avenues for rural employment and income generation.
To ensure a sustainable supply of green fodder, the Chairman instructed that all cow shelters must undertake plantation of Moringa (Sahjan) and Napier grass. He also directed authorities to expedite the revival of the non-operational biogas plant at the large cow protection centre in Karimuddinpur.
In 2024, the Yogi Adityanath government unveiled plans to offer land for cow dung-based biogas plants. Last month, Uttar Pradesh Gau Seva Aayog has proposed a plan for installation of mini biogas plants in more than one lakh rural households across the state.
Focus on Cow Protection
Reviewing the functioning of cow shelters, the Chairman directed Ghazipur officials to adopt scientific classification of cattle based on size, age, and gender. He stressed that separating large and small animals, as well as male and female cattle, would improve their care, health monitoring, and overall management.
Commission member Ramakant Upadhyay highlighted the need to provide cattle with adequate fodder, including dry fodder, green grass, and balanced feed as per prescribed standards. He also stressed regular cleaning of feeding areas, timely deworming, and the provision of cow lifter machines at larger shelters, wherever required.
