Tata Steel, Hygenco collaborate to produce green ammonia & green hydrogen

Tata Steel Special Economic Zone Limited (TSSEZL) and HHP Five Private Limited (Hygenco) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish a project for green hydrogen and green ammonia at TSSEZL’s Gopalpur Industrial Park (GIP) in Ganjam district of Odisha.

According to the agreement, Hygenco will acquire land in Ganjam district to build its unit for green hydrogen, green ammonia, and their derivatives.

Hygenco, renowned for its production of low-cost green hydrogen, aims to gradually produce 1 million tonnes per annum (1 MnTPA) from this plant, with the initial phase set to commence by December 2026.

Manikanta Naik, Managing Director of Tata Steel, expressed satisfaction with the participation of Hygenco, highlighting that the total committed capacity for manufacturing green hydrogen and green ammonia at the industrial park now reaches approximately 2.6 MnTPA, establishing it as a pivotal hub for these sustainable products in India.

Amit Bansal, Founder and CEO of Hygenco, emphasized their goal of delivering the most cost-effective green ammonia to clients and their strategic vision of becoming a leading player in the global sector. The produced green ammonia will be exported via the existing Gopalpur port facility, with the utility corridor, currently under development, expected to improve logistics and pipeline connectivity for the project.

Hygenco has already secured numerous long-term off-take agreements for green hydrogen in India, including the country’s inaugural megawatt-scale plant in Hisar, Haryana.

Tata Steel had previously entered into similar agreements with other manufacturers to establish green hydrogen and ammonia projects, totaling 1.6 Mn TPA, at Gopalpur Industrial Park.
