Reliance & GAIL agree for CBG-CGD synchronisation

In a major push to integrate renewable energy into India’s gas distribution infrastructure, GAIL Gas Limited, GAIL (India) Limited and Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) signed a Tripartite Agreement (TPA) to enable the blending and supply of Compressed Bio Gas (CBG) in City Gas Distribution (CGD) networks.

The deal has been signed at the India Energy Week 2026. The signing ceremony was attended by senior executives, including Goutom Chakraborty, Chief Executive Officer of GAIL Gas Limited, Sudhir Kumar Dixit, Chief Operating Officer, and Amit Jhalani, Chief Financial Officer.

The agreement has been executed under the CBG–CGD Synchronisation Scheme and will initially cover the geographical areas of Meerut in Uttar Pradesh and Raisen in Madhya Pradesh. The collaboration aims to ensure seamless sourcing, transportation and integration of CBG into existing CGD networks, thereby strengthening the domestic bio-gas ecosystem.

Industry officials said the partnership marks a critical step towards scaling up the use of renewable gaseous fuels across the natural gas value chain. By facilitating the injection of CBG into CGD networks, the initiative is expected to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, lower carbon emissions and support India’s climate commitments.

The agreement also aligns with the Government of India’s broader energy transition roadmap, which promotes the adoption of sustainable and low-carbon fuels while enhancing energy security. With major public and private sector players coming together, the initiative is expected to accelerate CBG adoption and create a more resilient, environmentally sustainable gas distribution framework.

The collaboration underscores the growing role of bio-based fuels in India’s clean energy transition and reflects industry commitment to advancing greener energy solutions.
