PM Modi inaugurates India’s first green hydrogen fuel cell ferry in Kochi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s first indigenous green hydrogen fuel cell inland waterway vessel today, marking the launch of the “Harit Nauka” initiative. Manufactured by Cochin Shipyard, this green hydrogen based vessel aligns with India’s net-zero commitments.

Cochin Shipyard took on the design, development, and construction of India’s inaugural fully indigenous hydrogen fuel cell catamaran ferry vessel. This pilot project aims to showcase the technology’s potential for the maritime sector.

Cochin Shipyard said on the development, “The inauguration of this project will provide the impetus for using hydrogen in marine applications as envisaged under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. Early adoption of hydrogen fuel cell technology in the marine sector will give India a global competitive advantage, meeting the sustainable green energy aspirations of our nation for net-zero emissions.”

The vessel, constructed at the Cochin Shipyard, is a 24-meter catamaran designed to accommodate 50 passengers in fully air-conditioned comfort. Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) stated that this vessel will enhance urban mobility, ensuring a smooth and convenient experience for passengers.

As part of a significant event held in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, the vessel was inaugurated alongside the laying of the foundation stone for a project worth ₹17,300 crore. This event encompassed various activities, including the inauguration of the outer harbor at the V.O. Chidambaranar Port, dedication of 75 lighthouses across 10 States and Union territories, and inauguration of several rail and road network projects.

Prime Minister Modi highlighted the significance of the hydrogen cell-powered inland waterway vessel, a product of the Harit Nauka initiative. He referred to it as a gift from the people of Tamil Nadu to Kashi, emphasizing the strong connection between the two regions. Modi also expressed his gratitude for the warmth and support shown by the people of Tamil Nadu during the Kashi Tamil Sangamam. Additionally, he praised the vessel built at CSL for its contribution to embracing clean energy solutions and aligning with the nation’s net-zero commitments.

Prime Minister Modi also unveiled various projects geared toward transforming the V.O. Chidambaranar Port into the country’s premier Green Hydrogen Hub Port. These projects include a desalination plant, hydrogen production facilities, and bunkering facilities.
