Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurates BPCL CBG plant at Brahmapuram in Kochi

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has commissioned the much awaited Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant at Brahmapuram in Kochi, marking a major step towards sustainable waste management and clean energy production in Kerala.

The facility was virtually inaugurated by Pinarayi Vijayan, Chief Minister of Kerala, who delivered the inaugural address. Suresh Gopi, Union Minister of State for Petroleum & Natural Gas and Tourism, delivered the keynote speech at the event.

The programme was presided over by M. B. Rajesh, Minister for Local Self Governments, Rural Development & Excise, while P. Rajeev, Minister for Law, Industries & Coir, attended as Guest of Honour.

Designed to process 150 tonnes of municipal solid waste per day, the Brahmapuram CBG plant will convert biodegradable waste into 5.6 tonnes of compressed biogas and 28 tonnes of organic manure daily. The project is expected to significantly reduce landfill burden while generating renewable energy and nutrient-rich organic fertiliser.

Senior BPCL officials, including Sanjay Khanna, Director (Refineries) and in-charge Chairman & Managing Director, along with other refinery executives, were present at the ceremony. Representatives from the Kerala government, local self-government bodies, and associated agencies also attended.

The initiative strengthens Kerala’s efforts toward scientific waste management and supports India’s broader push for circular economy practices and clean fuel adoption. With the commissioning of the Brahmapuram plant, BPCL has reinforced its commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible urban waste management.

BPCL is expanding its CBG business with quite speed to achieve Net Zero ambitions. As per one estimate, the state owned PSU is developing more than 26 biogas plants, including partnerships with GPS Renewables and municipal waste projects. It recently signed multiple CBG Tripartite Agreements (TPAs) in Uttar Pradesh to strengthen the integration of CBG or biogas into BPCL City Gas Distribution (CGD) network.
